Every old car has a moment where trust starts to return.
For this Golf, this trip was one of those moments.
After years in storage, a service, a few repairs, and an inspection, the car was finally back on the road. Short drives are one thing. A proper road trip is something else entirely.
This journey to Trondheim felt like the first real test.
More than a destination
The goal was Trondheim, but the drive was always the important part.
Modern cars make long distances easy. They isolate you from almost everything happening around you.
The Golf does the opposite.
You hear the engine. You notice the road surface. You pay attention to hills, wind, temperature, and every sound that seems slightly different than usual.
It turns driving into something active rather than automatic.
A stop by the water
One of the advantages of driving an old car is that you tend to stop more often.
Sometimes to stretch your legs.
Sometimes to check something.
And sometimes because the scenery is simply too good to ignore.
The stop happened on the waterfront in Trondheim, looking out toward Munkholmen.
The weather was calm, the sky was covered by low clouds, and the fjord had that muted blue-grey color that seems to appear only on overcast summer evenings.
The Golf looked right at home there.
Not because it was particularly special, but because older cars somehow fit naturally into places with a bit of history behind them.
I spent more time taking photos than I originally intended. The view toward Munkholmen, the breakwater, and the old Volkswagen kept offering different angles every time I moved a few meters.
The car
What continues to surprise me is how willing the Golf is to keep going.
When we pulled it out of storage earlier this year, I expected a long list of problems and expensive repairs. Instead, it has slowly proven itself to be far healthier than expected.
It still has small things that need attention.
Every old car does.
But somewhere along the way, the focus shifted from fixing it to enjoying it.
That is a good place to be.
Looking back
The photos from this stop are not really about the car.
They are about a moment.
A forty-four-year-old Volkswagen parked beside the sea. A quiet evening. A view toward Munkholmen. A road trip that reminded me why I wanted the car back on the road in the first place.
The Golf just happened to be part of the story.
And honestly, that is exactly what I hoped for when I decided to put it back on the road.
